The Honest Side of the Recommendation
When you manage purchasing for an office, nobody warns you that lighting will take over your life. I'm the office administrator for a mid-sized creative company—about 130 people across two floors. Step 1: List Your Constraints Before You Look at a Single Fixture
Start with a table, a spreadsheet, or a notebook. For each room or zone, write down four things:
- Ceiling type and height (plaster, acoustic tile, exposed concrete)
- Mounting points: what's above the ceiling, and how much weight can it take
- Existing electrical points and which switch circuit they're on
- Whether the space needs dimming or daylight-linked controls
This is the unglamorous work that saves you from ordering a beautiful piece you can't actually hang. Step 4: Verify Compatibility Before You Order—Especially Dimmers and Drivers
This is the step that bit me hardest, and honestly, it's why I'm writing this article.
Everything I'd read about specifying lighting said the hard part was aesthetics. In practice, the hard part is electrical compatibility. Specifically: does the fixture's LED driver work with the switch or dimmer on your existing circuit?
I knew I should check driver specs before ordering. But I thought, "what are the odds the standard switches we have are a problem?" Bad thinking. Step 5: How to Set a Motion Sensor Light Switch the Right Way
Motion sensors are great for utility zones. They cut energy use, and they eliminate the "who left the light on in the bathroom" email chain. Occupancy sensors are a well-documented energy-saving measure—the U.S. Department of Energy's guidance materials (energy.gov) note they can reduce lighting energy use considerably in areas that aren't occupied continuously. If you're setting these up for a commercial space, or training your facilities person to maintain them, here's the routine I follow for a typical wall-mounted PIR motion sensor light switch:
- Kill the power at the breaker. Confirm the wiring in the junction box: line, load, neutral, ground. Most smart motion switches need a neutral; if your box doesn't have one, you need a different model.
- Install the switch and restore power. If you're not comfortable with the wiring itself, have a licensed electrician do the installation. The setup and testing after that is something you can do yourself.
- Set the time delay. Usually a dial or small button. For bathrooms and storage rooms, 1 to 5 minutes is reasonable. - Walk-test the detection range. Here's my overconfidence mistake. I knew I should test the range before finalizing placement, but I thought "PIR sensors cover a wide area, what are the odds—" Well. Our storage room is L-shaped, and the sensor mounted on the wall at the entrance could only see one leg of the L. Anyone walking into the back section wasn't detected. Schedule the furniture layout before the lighting order, and get the electrician and the architect in the same room (or the same video call) before you place the order. If I could redo it, I'd get the electrician to confirm the mounting positions in writing before the fixtures ship. - Forgetting about the documents. Store driver specs, datasheets, and installation manuals in one folder. When something fails 14 months later, you'll be glad you did. In 2024, a vendor who couldn't produce proper documentation cost us three hours of the electrician's time just to access a driver. I made this a standard step for every project since.
The Honest Side of the Recommendation
I recommend Moooi for statement zones in offices that can accommodate the lead times and budget. But there are plenty of spaces where it's not the right choice. If your project has a tight budget, a short timeline, or needs fixtures that are completely unremarkable, buy something simpler. There is no shame in a clean, functional track light. Saying "this isn't the right project for the Moooi Random Light Small" is better than forcing a beautiful object into a space that doesn't suit it.

That's before installation, which runs around $150–$300 per service visit for a licensed electrician in major U.S. metro areas as a baseline. Verify current pricing, as it moves frequently. If the budget doesn't stretch, ask your lighting supplier about trade discount programs—I've had surprisingly good results from just asking.
That's the whole checklist. It's not glamorous, but it's the difference between lighting that looks good in a photo and lighting that works in the room. And if there's one thing I've learned from buying for 130 people who aren't shy about sharing opinions, it's that good lighting goes unnoticed, and bad lighting gets remembered.
