Scenario C: The Fixtures Have Arrived and You Believe "New" Is a Condition

Step 2: Test the LED module in diode mode

Switch your multimeter to diode mode — the symbol with an arrow meeting a vertical bar. (Not continuity mode, which is the same icon plus sound waves; continuity beeps and is for wiring faults, not LED dies.)

Place the red probe on the module's positive/anode side and the black on negative/cathode. A healthy LED array will show a forward voltage drop — commonly 2.8V to 3.4V per diode or chain, and sometimes higher on bright modules. Reverse the probes: you should see OL (over-limit/open). If you get a low reading in both directions, the module is shorted. If you get nothing either way, it's open. Both mean a dead board.

If the LED module sits behind a diffuser, test at the connector — the quick-connect plug carries the same signal. Just note polarity: most connectors use red for positive and black for negative, but not all.

A caveat: testing a complete LED bulb (as opposed to a fixture module) is messier because there's a driver circuit inside the base, and its capacitors can interfere with the diode reading. If you're testing a standalone LED bulb, you might see the numbers drift as a capacitor charges. That's not you doing it wrong — it's a switch-mode driver muddying the signal. In that case, a known-good socket is the more reliable test.

The counterintuitive lesson from Portland was this: same model, same batch, same carton is not the same condition. I've since seen one good, one dead, and one with reversed wiring in a single three-fixture order. That's not a moooi quality complaint — it's what happens when glass, metal, and electronics cross an ocean in a truck. The test needs to be a line item in your installation schedule.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In (Before Your Budget Does)

  • If fixtures are on site and the electrician's truck is pulling up — Scenario C. Run the multimeter test before you hang anything.

The point of splitting it into scenarios isn't to make you a lighting expert. It's to make sure you ask the right question at the right time. The checklist I maintain now lives in a shared spreadsheet with my clients, updated at every project milestone. It's unglamorous process work, but process is exactly what lets a small team deliver projects that look bespoke without collapsing into rework.
