Week 12 of a 14-week hotel renovation. The moooi Flock of Light — the centerpiece of the lobby — is sitting in a crate, and the opening date won't move. This isn't a hypothetical. I've been on the receiving end of these calls for six years.

- The structural ceiling type (concrete, steel deck, wood truss) — not just the drywall
- The rating of the existing junction box

This is where the "chandelier downlight" question comes up in every commercial project I run. Designers ask: "Will the chandelier provide enough task light on its own?"
Most of the time, the answer is no. A moooi chandelier is statement lighting. It's ambient, atmospheric, and often directional — but it's not a replacement for well-planned architectural downlights. That's not a flaw. It's a design division of labor: downlights for function, chandelier for identity.
Also in the spec sheet: hanging height range, driver requirements, and dimming compatibility. The moooi Tube Light, for instance, has a specific minimum hanging height that affects light distribution. Get this wrong at the spec stage, and you're reworking it at the install stage.
Step 3: Bench-test everything before it goes near the ceiling
People assume a fixture works because it's new and expensive. What they don't see is the number of brand-new fixtures that arrive with a loose connection, a faulty driver, or a dimming incompatibility that only shows up when you hit the switch.
In March 2024, a client called at 11am needing a $9,000 moooi Random Light installed for a gallery opening the next evening. Normal turnaround is two days. We bench-tested it, found the included driver was incompatible with the client's 0-10V dimming system, sourced a replacement locally, paid $300 in express fees, and had it hung with four hours to spare. The client's alternative was missing their opening night.
Skipping the bench test would have meant the fixture going up, failing, and coming back down — a full install sequence repeated at double the labor cost.
Not ideal, but workable. That's what I tell clients when they ask why we're taking an extra hour to test a fixture on a table before hanging it.
Step 4: Coordinate the electrical before anyone climbs a ladder
Here's what trips up even experienced electricians who've never worked with designer lighting: moooi fixtures often come with their own drivers and plug-and-play connections. They're not wired like a standard "hardwire and screw in the bulbs" fixture.
Confirm these before install day:
- Voltage compatibility (110V vs. 220V — yes, this gets missed)
- Dimming protocol (leading-edge, trailing-edge, 0-10V, DALI)
- Whether the driver is remote or integrated
- UL/ETL listing for US installation (or CE marking where accepted)
The phrase I hear most from panicked clients: "But the electrician didn't know it needed a special driver."
Now you know. Check it before install day.
Step 5: Install the rail, canopy, or suspension point first
Every moooi fixture has a specific install sequence. The Flock of Light is the most demanding: ceiling rail first, then the branch arms, then the individual light modules along the rail.
For a Tube Light, it's simpler: canopy, suspension cable, then the fixture body. But the sequence still matters, because you adjust the height from the top, not the bottom.
If you're spec'ing a shaded chandelier — something like the Random Light with its sphere shades — handle the shades with gloves during this step. And leave the final alignment until after the fixture is hanging. Installing shades before the fixture is lifted risks smudges, scratches, and misalignment, all of which mean another trip up the ladder.
Step 6: Hang, level, and align
Two people minimum. Three is better. One on the ladder, two on the ground giving sightlines.
- Level the canopy and rail
- Verify the hanging height at multiple points — the center can be right while the sides are off by an inch
- For Flock of Light, distribute the modules evenly and make sure the rail runs straight
- For shaded fixtures, rotate the shades to their best-facing angle. This is design work, not mechanical work
Then step back. Literally. View the fixture from across the room, and again from the main entrance. That's what your client will see first.
Step 7: Walk the space before you sign off
So the fixture is up. Now the part most installers skip: turning everything on and walking the space.
- Check the chandelier at full brightness and at 10% dimming. Flicker at low levels is real, and it's usually a driver issue
- Check it against the downlights — do they conflict or complement? A chandelier that fights with the downlights creates glare, not ambiance
- Look for hot spots and dark corners created by the new fixture
- Clean the shades, rail, and lenses, then check the alignment one last time
One thing I've learned: the light will look different at night than during the day. If you can, schedule the walk for both.
When to call in the specialists
Look, I'm not saying you should never attempt a moooi install without specialist help. But I am saying there are cases where I bring one in without hesitation:
- Sloped ceilings or skylights that need non-standard mounting hardware
- Historic buildings with unknown structure
- High-bay spaces requiring a scissor lift or rigging
- Custom dimming systems you haven't worked with before
A vendor who told me, "This isn't our strength — here's who does it better," earned my trust for everything else. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. The same goes for my own role: there are installs I won't take, and I'm upfront about it.

A few lessons learned the hard way:
Skipping the bench test to save an hour. Cost me a full re-install and a $2,000 overtime bill. Never again.
Assuming the included driver supports the client's dimming system. It often doesn't. Check the spec sheet, not your assumptions.
Not checking the rail length on a Flock of Light until install day. The rail was two feet too short for the specified layout. The fixture had to be re-ordered. The project missed its deadline.
Installing shades before the fixture was aligned. Smudged, scratched, and misaligned. Replacing the shades set the project back a week.
Bottom line: a moooi chandelier is a design centerpiece. Treat it that way — not as a "hang it and hope" afterthought. Structure first, specs second, bench test third, then installation. Get those in the right order and the deadline stops being the problem.
